Two deadlines
Demurrage applies after free time while the container remains at the terminal. Per diem or detention applies after the line’s free days outside the terminal, until the empty is returned to an accepted location.
Last free day (LFD)
The last free day is the final date before charges apply. Confirm it with the terminal or line; counting rules depend on the applicable tariff or contract.
- Discharge does not necessarily mean available for pickup
- Verify whether holds affect free time

When to pre-pull
If the receiver cannot accept delivery before LFD, compare pre-pull, yard storage, chassis, and potential line detention with terminal charges. A pre-pull can reduce demurrage but does not eliminate the other costs.
